Test Results and the “Science” of Teaching

Monthly parent meetings with Superintendent Bo Gutzwiller—called “Coffees with Mr. G”— never fail to provide engaging opportunities for dialogue. Informal and interactive best characterizes this time when parents come to learn and participate in meaningful discussion; and school administrators come to share new findings in a setting that welcomes parent feedback. Last month’s topic, for example, highlighted Terra Nova student test results and ways in which parents can translate and utilize the information to benefit their child’s education. In earlier times, education was principally regarded as the “art of teaching,” Mr. Gutzwiller explained. In recent years we have seen a shift to include the “science of teaching,” knowing how to interpret data and test scores to enhance the ability of educators and parents to make informed decisions about a child’s learning profile. The last session was recorded for delayed broadcast, you can view it here…
