At Back to School night we told you about an exciting day we have planned for students and parents to engage some of the most important topics facing this generation. We believe part of our mission as a Christian school is to help our students navigate an ever-changing, fast-paced, ultra technological culture. Coincidentally, just last night CNN published an eye-opening study titled “#Being 13: Inside the Secret World of Teens“. They found that most 8th graders check their social media feeds over 100 times a day!
On Thursday, October 15th we have invited a ministry called Axis to spend the day and evening here at FCS. Axis’ mission is to equip schools, churches, and parents to have deep and confident conversations with the next generation about faith, media, and technology. We are thrilled that they are coming and believe it will be a formative, enriching, and empowering day for all. The Axis team will spend the bulk of the school day presenting and interacting with our 5th-8th grade students on topics like social media, relationships, and how to read the Bible.
In the evening from 7:00–8:30 PM, the Axis team will be meeting with parents in the gym. We believe so strongly in the importance of this that we are making it a mandatory event for all 4th-8th grade parents. As an added incentive, Mrs. Kitchel has approved a casual dress day for any student who has at least one parent attend.
On a personal note, I have been working with young people for the past 15+ years and have seen first hand the influence and the power the media and technology wield over students. Now, as a parent of a 4th grade student myself, I know the stakes could not be any higher. I feel so blessed to have this opportunity to engage in these discussions with our students, to equip them, and then to get equipped to have them at home. I know you will be blessed too!
Looking forward to seeing you there!
