Process Art vs. Product Art

Last week, Early Ed. Specialist and Teacher Trainer, Carly Bedard, M.A.Ed visited the preschool to present a three hour art workshop titled Process Art versus Product Art.

Bedard discussed the importance of introducing process art into the classroom which tends to focus more on product art. Many of our teachers walked away encouraged and equipped to incorporate more process art in their curriculum which ultimately inspires creativity and exploration in our students.

Product Art still has its place in the classroom and can teach equally important skills such as critical thinking (what comes first, second, third?), following instruction, and fine motor skills. However striking a balance between process and product seemed to be the ultimate goal.

Characteristics of Process Art and Product Art

Process Art

  • No samples for children to follow
  • No step-by-step instruction
  • Focused on experience, exploration of techniques, tools and materials
  • Everyone might use the materials differently
  • Inspires creativity and exploration

Product Art

  • Children have instructions to follow with a sample prepared by the teacher
  • There’s a finished product in mind
  • There’s a right and wrong way to proceed
  • Encourages fine motor skills like cutting, drawing on a line, pasting
  • Teaches how to follow instruction and thought process (what comes first, second, third?)
