Err on the Side of Caution

footballhelmetsAs I thought about our new uniforms and improvements on campus, I found myself thinking about trend-setting for our school and our league. There is a new trend emerging in high schools, and I believe it’s only a matter of time before this good trend trickles down to the junior high level.

The trend is focused on safety and football. In junior high context, we play “flag,” but that doesn’t mean there isn’t a lot of contact between players. Having coached high school football, I have personally witnessed the risks of head injury, even in a passing league game. According to a comment in Brainline.org, a popular resource on this topic, “Concussions can have serious and long-term health effects, and even a seemingly mild ‘ding’ or a bump on the head can be serious.” So why take the risk? The cliché may be a bit worn, but I can’t think of a better statement. “Let’s err on the side of caution!”

Helmets give our student athletes a sense of protection while playing football. Of course football is a contact sport and the risk of injury is always present, no matter how much protection one wears. However, we can do our best to prevent injury by reducing the risk. FCS is certainly recognized throughout Southern California for setting trends, and when it comes to the safety and well-being of our kids, wearing helmets during games and practice just makes a whole lot of sense! Go Eagles.
